Financial accidents and accountability

Rolling Stone has a rather apocalyptic view of the current state of the financial meltdown - which is definitely worth a read.
The following sentence gives the flavor.

And the worst part about it is that we're still in denial — we still think this is some kind of unfortunate accident, not something that was created by the group of psychopaths on Wall Street whom we allowed to gang-rape the American Dream.

It is a tragedy that many - including those who should know better - do actually believe that what we are enduring is some kind of accident . It's the classic technique of a bogus and entrenched elite designed to side-step their ultimate accountability and hang on to their supposed managerial credentials. Similar kinds of spin can be found in such phrases as "just a few rotten apples" and "it's time to move on and get this behind us".
